Windows 8 was already made official and is expected to become available sometime next year on desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. At least one mobile phone will be powered by the upcoming OS iteration, namely the ITG xpPhone 2 that can be seen in the photos attached to this article.

This is not the first mobile phone we hear of to be powered by a desktop flavor of Microsoft's Windows client, though it still sounds intriguing.

However, given the fact that Windows 8 was long rumored to thin the line between desktop PCs and smartphones, it does not come too much as a surprise that such handsets already came to the spotlight.

The xpPhone 2 is expected to become available for purchase only in January next year, featuring a slimmer design when compared to its predecessor, which came to shelves with the Windows XP OS on board.

The new mobile phone arrives on shelves with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 chip inside, which is complemented by 2GB of RAM, set to provide users with increased performance capabilities.

Moreover, the new device sports 112GB of SSD storage, which is quite a lot for a mobile phone, as well as a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display.

Apparently, the phone's battery can deliver up to 18 hours of call time or 46 days on standby, which sounds great enough for a device of the kind.

The upcoming ITG xpPhone 2 is also expected to provide support for both Windows 7 and Windows 8, and will most probably pack the former if released in January.

The company chose to install Windows on this device due to the fact that the OS offers a wider range of applications than current mobile platforms can deliver.

Until more is announced on the final release date of this device, you can have a look at it in the photos below, available courtesy of Engadget.
