IPFire 2.15 Core 86, a new version of the popular Linux-based firewall distribution, has been announced by Michael Tremer and users have been advised to upgrade their systems as soon as possible.

The IPFire Linux distribution is actually a firewall distro, which means that it's built specifically to provide security for your PC, but it can be also used as a server or gateway. It's developed with a modular structure in mind and this allows users to implement exactly the kind of features they want and nothing more.

IPFire updates come in small batches

IPFire doesn't usually takes big leaps when it comes to updates and users are not subjected to big changes. The same can be said about the current iteration of the distribution, although there are some modifications that warrant some explications.

"This is the official release announcement of IPFire 2.15 – Core Update 86 which brings various security fixes across several packages. Hence we recommend installing this update as soon as possible and to execute a reboot afterwards," said Michael Tremer in the announcement.

He also explains that OpenSSL has been updated to version 1.0.1k, openvpn 5.2.1 has been implemented, and a number of security problems have been closed. From the looks of it, the current version was actually supposed to be IPFire 2.17, but that launch has been postponed. A launch date hasn't been proposed.

The developers recommend all users of IPFire to upgrade their distributions. More details can be found on the official website. You can download IPFire IPFire 2.15 Core 86 right now from Softpedia.
