IHS iSuppli has issued its Compute Platforms Q3 2011 Market Tracker report looking at the world’s top PC vendors, of which China’s Lenovo has become the third largest PC OEM in Q2, with Apple and Samsung also posting strong growth.

Looking at Apple’s figures in particular, iSuppli noted that its growth has expanded in this second quarter, making it one of two other PC brands able to achieve double-digit year-over-year growth, besides Lenovo.

Taking the seventh spot, “Propelled by strong growth in its desktop and notebook business, Apple’s PC shipments amounted to 3.8 million, up 13.6 percent from 3.3 million in the second quarter of 2010,” says iSuppli.

According to the market intelligence firm owned by analysis provider IHS, Apple this year recorded the third highest year-over growth in desktop shipments among the Top 10 PC OEMs (original equipment manufacturers).

The Cupertino, California based computer vendor posted the third largest growth in notebook shipments as well. Only Lenovo and Samsung were up ahead, said IHS iSuppli.

“Apple’s growth is attributable to its products being highly desirable and continuing to appeal to consumers, despite the weaker consumer demand environment,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms for IHS.

“The company’s performance was so strong that Apple now is less than 1 percentage point away from having sufficient market share to enter the Top 5 rankings,” Wilkins said.

Samsung, Apple’s rival on multiple industry fronts, as well as in court rooms, has bested the Mac maker by quite a margin, posting the highest growth of any Top-10 PC brand in the second quarter.

The Korean electronics maker saw its shipments rise by a shattering 31.3 percent to reach 3.1 million units shipped in Q2 2011. This compares to just 2.4 million during the same period last year, according to the IHS research note.
