Sharp has confirmed plans to begin producing IGZO Retina-grade displays that are suitable for Apple’s MacBook Air line, which currently doesn’t sport any Hi-DPI screen configurations.

In a press statement this week Sharp said it would kick off production of three types of IGZO LCD panels that have the highest-ever pixel densities.

Targeted specifically at notebooks, the screens will be produced in sizes ranging from 11.6 inches to 14 inches, and 15.6 inches.

“Production is scheduled to begin in June 2013 at Sharp's Kameyama Plant No. 2,” the Japanese company said.

Notably, the company has already started production of 13.3-inch IGZO panels, which means Apple could already introduce a version of the MacBook Air with a Retina display.

In the same announcement, Sharp promised to “work to further expand the range of applications using its IGZO LCD panels in products such as smartphones, tablet PCs, notebook PCs, and 4K displays.”
