This is a smaller and thinner alternative to the Iconia W700

Acer's Iconia brand is very well represented at this year's IFA 2012 trade show, so we didn't have too much trouble scoring a bit of personal time with the W510.

Verily, after shooting photos of the Iconia W700, which, incidentally, was harder to get close to (the line was problematic), it would have been strange for us to skip the W510.

There is also the matter of the latter being much more suited to consumers, as it features the “normal” screen size (10.1 inches instead of 11.6 inches) and a package whose thickness can't so easily scare us away (8.8 mm instead of 11.9mm).

Size and shape aren't the only differences though. There are core elements that are distinct, not the least of which is the CPU.

Whereas the W700 boasts an Ivy Bridge unit from the third-generation Core series, the A510 gets one of the Clover Trail Atoms.

The display is weaker as well, featuring a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels (HD), instead of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (Full HD).

There are some areas where it wins though. The cameras are one: an 8 MP at the back and a 2 MP at the front beat 1.3 MP / 5MP any day. Not only that, but the Iconia A510 gets a 3G broadband option as well.

As for storage, an eMMC+ card provides 64 GB (the W700 can get 32 GB too, and it used SSDs instead of eMMC+).

Finally, the tablet lasts for up to 8 hours on a battery charge, or 16 hours when the Keydock is in use.

Acer will probably ship the Iconia A510 starting in October, for $399 / 399 Euro (this is our best guess anyway). Customers can rest easy knowing that they will get Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microHDMI and micro-USB as part of the deal.
