One of the mobile phones that Softpedia had the chance to lay hands on at the IFA 2011 show in Berlin was the Samsung Galaxy W, a compact device that should land on shelves at a rather affordable price tag.

Galaxy is certainly one of the most successful series of Android-based mobile phones in the world, and Samsung knows it.

Last year's Galaxy S smartphone and this year's Galaxy S II flagship handset changed the world's perceptions towards Samsung's Android device, and the vendor decided to make a distinction between its devices, while keeping them in the same large family.

Thus, the company decided to name its Galaxy devices in accordance with the features and capabilities they can offer.

There will be flagship handsets that will land on shelves as Galaxy S phones, and also devices with premium features that will sport the name of Galaxy W (Wonder), the company unveiled a few weeks ago.

The Galaxy W that can be seen in the photos attached to this article features a fairly large 3.7-inch touchscreen display that can deliver a WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) resolution, and is powered by a 1.4GHz application processor.

Running under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the mobile phone will be able to offer capabilities similar to those that Galaxy S II can deliver, but it will certainly not offer the same high-end experience as the flagship device.

The Galaxy W also sports a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back with auto focus and video recording capabilities, as well as fast access to social networking sites to share photos with friends and family.

The specs list of this device also includes HSPA+ connectivity, WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, FM Radio, and built-in GPS receiver with support for Google Maps.

To enhance their experience, users can also download and install applications via the Android Market, while being able to access various services from Google, including Gmail, YouTube, Search, Calendar, and more.
