Connected GPS personal navigation devices seem to represent the natural evolution of technology in this particular area, since they can enhance the level of functionality by allowing drivers to be constantly informed on what's happening on the road in front of them or to find significant details and contact information regarding the nearest POIs. And for this reason, TomTom, one of the most important names in this particular market segment, has just unveiled a whole new range of such products, namely the GO x40 LIVE series.
According to TomTom's statement, the new TomTom GO x40 LIVE series features three models: TomTom GO 940 LIVE, TomTom GO 740 LIVE and TomTom GO 540 LIVE. The new PNDs are differentiated from the rest of the company's products by a flat design and a new, high-quality user-interface with optimized icons for even easier navigation through the device menu.
All products come with TomTom’s wide range of award-winning navigation features, including IQ Routes, HD Traffic as part of LIVE Services and TomTom Map Share, the company's proprietary social-networking-based map improvement technology. Furthermore, much in the same way as the similar devices recently announced by both Sony and Garmin, the new x40 LIVE series comes with an improved advanced lane guidance feature, which offers drivers clear instructions regarding complex junctions.
It's also very important to mention that the PNDs are accompanied by a new Active Dock model that incorporates a system connector, so the device can be semi-integrated into the car while ensuring easy docking and charging. Additionally, the PNDs from the TomTom GO LIVE series now also feature built-in microphones and provide support for voice commands and control, with over 100 tasks supporting voice activation.
Unfortunately, the TomTom GO x40 LIVE series will only be available in a restricted number of European countries starting with autumn 2008. However, it will be relatively affordable (349 Euros), which includes a three month free trial period for TomTom LIVE Services.
