The latest iteration of Internet Explorer is now supported officially for SharePoint Server 2010.

On April 7th, 2011, Microsoft updated the “Plan browser support (SharePoint Server 2010)” webpage on TechNet.

IT Professionals needing to prepare for the deployment of Internet Explorer 9 RTW in their organization, can visit the page and get additional information about IE9 in the context of SharePoint Server 2010.

Long story short, Internet Explorer 9 (32-bit) is joining the x86 versions of IE8 and IE7 as fully supported browsers on SharePoint 2010.

“A supported Web browser is a Web browser that is supported to work with SharePoint Server 2010, and all features and functionality work. If you encounter any issues, support can help you to resolve these issues,” Microsoft explains.

While I highly doubt it that any organization would opt for the 64-bit version of IE9 instead of the 32-bit flavor, those that need the browser to play nice with the latest iteration of SharePoint need to know that the x64 release is supported with some limitations.

“A supported Web browser with known limitations is a Web browser that is supported to work with SharePoint Server 2010, although there are some known limitations,” the Redmond company notes.

“Most features and functionality work, but if there is a feature or functionality that does not work or is disabled by design, documentation on how to resolve these issues is readily available.”

Obviously, IT pros will be able to access extensive information on just how x64 IE9 RTW fails to play nice with SharePoint 2010.

Essentially, those already familiar with the difficulties of leveraging x64 IE8 and SharePoint 2010 together must already be familiar with some of the limitations of 64-bit Internet Explorer 9.
