Internet Explorer 9 is off to a terribly good start with the browser hitting the web running, so to speak. Microsoft released the first statistics about the reaction to IE9 RTW worldwide, and there’s certainly a lot of love for the latest iteration of IE.

Among rave reviews from end users, developers, bloggers, mainstream media, etc., no less than 2.3 million copies of IE9 RTW were downloaded in the first day after launch alone.

“Internet Explorer 9 has now been downloaded 2.35 million times in the first 24 hours since its Monday night release. That is over 27 downloads every second, or over 240 downloads every 9 seconds. Wow,” revealed Ryan Gavin, Senior Director of Internet Explorer Business and Marketing.

Even before it was released to web, IE9 managed to break download records, climbing up to grab the top spot as the software giant’s largest Beta in history.

Over 40 million downloads of IE9 happened while the browser was still in the Beta and Release Candidate (RC) stages of the development process.

Although the Redmond company did not reveal any official usage numbers, it did point out that over 2% of Windows 7 users were already running IE9 ahead of RTW (release to web).

With over 300 million copies of Windows 7 already sold worldwide before SP1 was launched, the number of IE9 users is without a doubt quite consistent.

“We want to thank everyone around the world for downloading IE9 and the enthusiastic reception. 2.3 million downloads in 24 hours is over double the 1 million downloads we saw of the IE9 Beta and four times that of the IE9 RC over the same time period,” Gavin added.

Microsoft is preparing to give green light to IE9 automatic upgrades via Windows Updates on March 21st, 2011.
