It appears that some customers have been reporting rendering issues on Facebook when using the final release of Internet Explorer 9.

Microsoft has confirmed the problems, and indicated that some IE8 users as well as a number of early adopters that tested the browser during the Beta and Release Candidate (RC) development milestones and that subsequently made the jump to RTW are experiencing glitches.

It appears that at fault is IE9’s built in mechanism designed to help users view legacy websites the way they were intended for when built with IE6 or IE7 in mind.

“Recently we have some cases that the customers reported the rendering issues with Facebook after upgrading to IE9 RTM,” revealed a member of the Microsoft Reduce Customer Effort Center.

“In every case Facebook had been added to the Compatibility View list due to issues during the Beta or RC or IE8. Facebook does not want to be on the CV list, and we don’t want them on the CV list.”

IE9’s Compatibility View features works in accordance with a Compatibility View List provided by Microsoft.

The software giant has compiled a list with all the sites causing incompatibility issues with Internet Explorer 9.

For these specific websites, IE9 does not use the default rendering mode, but instead leverages the modes for IE6 or IE7, in order to provide the best user experience possible.

In the eventuality that Facebook was added in the past to the Compatibility View List for specific users, when upgrading to IE9 RTW they will experience rendering problems on the social network.

“To get back to a great rendering experience, please do the following: ALT + Tools: Compatibility View Settings and remove Facebook.com from the list. That should put Facebook back in IE9 mode,” the Microsoft Reduce Customer Effort Center representative added.
