14 DAY TRIAL // It appears that Mozilla can have its Internet Explorer 9 cake and eat it too. Microsoft has sent an IE9 cake to the rival browser vendor as Mozilla developers were celebrating the global availability of Firefox 4.0. While Firefox 4.0 bits became available for download this Monday, the official launch of the browser was kicked off on March 22nd, 2011.
When I wrote last about Firefox 4.0 the number of downloads was approaching the 2 million mark.
By the time this article will be published, the volume of Firefox 4.0 downloads is bound to surpass the 6 million milestone.
As it did with the launch of Firefox 3.0, the Redmond company offered a cake yesterday to Mozilla with the following message: “Congratulations on shipping! Love, the IE team.”
There’s also an Internet Explorer logo, and considering the recent release of IE, it can only be of IE9.
Microsoft launched IE9 RTW on March 15th, 2011, amassing over 2.3 million downloads in the first day alone.
Alex Faaborg, Principal designer on Firefox posted an image of the Redmond company’s gift offered for the Firefox 4.0 launch day celebration.
Mozilla offered a range of reasons for users to jump aboard the Firefox 4.0 bandwagon, including a consistent increase in performance.
“With dramatic speed and performance advancements across the board, Firefox is between two and six times faster than previous releases. Major enhancements to the JavaScript engine make everything from startup time to page load speed to graphics and JavaScript performance screaming fast in Firefox,” the open source browser vendor stated.
Firefox 4.0 also sports an overhauled user interface, and a collection of new features, including App Tabs, Switch to Tab, Panorama, Do Not Track, Content Security Policy, Firefox Sync, etc.
At the same time, Firefox 4.0 is one of the most compliant browser releases, designed to play nice with modern web standards such as HTML5, CSS3, SVG, and others.
