Early adopters that are already running the next iteration of Internet Explorer needn’t worry about the security updates offered in October 2010 for IE. This because, Internet Explorer 9 is not affected by any of the vulnerabilities patched in this month’s update effort from Microsoft which is synonymous with the release of no less than 16 security bulletins designed to resolve a record 49 vulnerabilities not just in IE, but also in Windows, Office and the .NET Framework.

However, this is not the case for customers relying on older versions of Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-071 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2360131)) rated Critical, has been released on October 12, and brings patches for a total of 10 security vulnerabilities for pre-IE9 versions of the browser.

“This security update resolves seven privately reported vulnerabilities and three publicly disclosed vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer,” Microsoft stated.

“The most severe vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer.

“Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.”

With the exception of IE9, all other supported versions of Internet Explorer are impacted by the release of the October 2010 security updates for IE.

Furthermore, the IE security bulleting is rated Critical for IE6, IE7 and IE8 on Windows clients; but only Important for the same three browser versions of Windows servers.

“The security update addresses these vulnerabilities by modifying the way that Internet Explorer handles objects in memory, CSS special characters, HTML sanitization, the AutoComplete feature, the Anchor element, and script during certain processes,” the software giant added.

Internet Explorer 9 hit the Beta development stage on September 15th, 2010. At this point in time the Beta of IE9 continues to be available for download.

While the release is indeed a Beta, it is a very broad Beta, which means that Microsoft has intended for this Build of IE9 to be tested by as many users as possible.

Since its release, IE9 Beta was downloaded over 6 million times, according to information provided by the Redmond company.

Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) Build 9.0.7930.16406 is available for download here.
