It’s not uncommon for Microsoft to port technologies from its client and server operating systems to other flavors of the Windows platform. Case in point: Internet Explorer 9 which has made its way to Windows Embedded releases.

According to the Redmond company, a version of Internet Explorer 9 is now available to customers running Windows Embedded POSReady 7.

The software giant has expanded Windows’ reach to a range of devices, including Point of Service solutions, with Windows Embedded POSReady 7 being the latest iteration of an offering formerly dubbed WEPOS.

Although different products, Windows 7 and Windows Embedded POSReady 7 share a number of components, including Windows Media Player 12 and Remote Desktop Protocol 7.1.

In addition to the technologies enumerated above, both operating systems now play nice with Internet Explorer 9.

Microsoft shipped Windows Embedded POSReady 7 originally with IE8, and is offering customers the chance to upgrade their browser.

According to Lynda Allen, from the Windows Embedded team, original equipment manufacturers can head over to the ECE site in order to download IE9 for Windows Embedded POSReady 7. OEMs will of course need to have valid ECE site accounts in order to get access to the IE9 for POSReady 7 bits.

Since Windows Embedded POSReady 7 offers support for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, the IE9 flavor tailored to this Point of Service OS also plays nice with both x64 and x86 CPUs.

Some Softpedia readers might remember that Microsoft released a version of Internet Explorer 9 for another Windows Embedded release just a few months ago.

Customers running Windows Embedded Standard 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) received IE9 in mid-August 2011, also via the ECE site.

Windows Embedded POSReady 7 was finalized in the summer of 2011 – Microsoft is offering a trial release for testing.
