Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, Google Chrome Beta and Firefox 3.1 Alpha 2 Release Candidate are all development milestones of the browsers developed by Microsoft, Google and Mozilla. Of course that with the advent of Google Browser (Chrome) on September 2, 2008, the browser market is bound to see additional competition, and in this context, comparisons are inherent.

IE8 Beta 2, Chrome and Firefox 3.1 have already been thrown against one another in arenas designed to evaluate their resource consumption and the performance of their JavaScript engines. But, naturally, there is always the aspect of web standard compliance and support. For this there are two browser measuring tools, namely the Acid2 and Acid3 tests from the Web Standards Project.

"Acid2 tests features that web designers have been requesting. Everything that Acid2 tests is specified in a Web standard, but not all Web standards are tested. Acid2 does not guarantee conformance with any specification. After careful consideration, we have selected and are testing the features we consider most important for the future of the web," reads an excerpt from the description of the Acid2 Test.

As you can very well see from the screenshots integrated at the bottom of this article, IE8 Beta 1, Google Chrome Beta, and Firefox 3.1 codename Shiretoko Alpha 2 RC all pass the Acid2 Test with flying colors, as should in fact be expected. However, not the same can be said about the Acid3 Test. Actually, quite on the contrary, all three browser versions fail miserably.

"Acid3 is primarily testing specifications for "Web 2.0" dynamic Web applications. Also there are some visual rendering tests, including webfonts," reveals a message posted on the official Acid3 test webpage.

When it comes down to the Acid3 test, Firefox 3.1 codename Shiretoko leads the pack with a score of 85 out of 100. Google Chrome, although just a first Beta, comes in second with 78 out of 100. And Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 is third with an insignificant 21 out of 100.

Why didn't you compare Googfle Chrome to Opera?
Opera is worth comparing to its peers cause it is a STANDARD of browser quality at the moment.

Comment #2 by: Adrian on 04 Sep 2008, 20:47 GMT reply to this comment

Opera 9.52 score with Acid3 test is 84 out of 100.

Nice quick review there, but where was Opera in the mix?

Comment #4 by: Option on 05 Sep 2008, 04:33 GMT reply to this comment

Firefox is a slow browser compare to Opera... why even bother to compare it Chrome...

Comment #5 by: Jay on 05 Sep 2008, 05:39 GMT reply to this comment

Why don't you compare it with Safari 4 Developer preview and with opera
Safari 4 passes both acid 2 and acid 3 test(100/100) and
Opera 9.52 passes acid 2 test and scores 84/100 in acid 3 test
so waiting for complete review between all these 5 browsers and perfect result like javascript loading time and acid est result and page loading etc.......

Any thoughts on the Mozilla branch off browser, Flock?

It has a Beta 2 version that is quite nice.

because opera has such a small market segment that its no use to compare it to the other browsers... hell even chrome got a bigger % of users after just some days then opera

I would rate them as following.

1. Firefox
2. Opera
3. Internet Explorer
4. Safari
5. Chrome

However, I guess, Safari is faster than any of the other despite a lot of errors.

Segment of Opera is as large as FF.
They don`t want to include Opera there (especially 9.60.10421=9.60 RC1), because rating will be like this:
1.Opera
2.Opera
3.Opera
4.Safari
5=ff=chrome=IE.
Chrome works on Google services nice. And that it.

you are right opera is going great these days ahead of all

Opera 9.52 is the fastest web browser than google chrome. Google chrome looks nice but its speed slower than opera. Safari? Last in my favourite browser, too much bugs. IE not a chance.

Disadvantages of opera is add-on. Firefox had a lot of add-on but opera only have useless widgets. I prefer use both of it.

Comment #12 by: txznm on 23 Sep 2008, 12:25 GMT reply to this comment

Would the last three posters please like to carry out actual tests of opera vs firefox, before claiming that it is faster?

Firefox 3 > Opera 9.52 and 9.60beta in javascript performance ( sunspider) and in real world page load time.

Similarly, Chrome is faster than both firefox 3 and opera.

Pure performance:
1. Chrome
2. Firefox
3. Opera
4. Safari (bypassing the early flag)

Do some research before spouting rubbish.

Ah! come on enough with opera greater than firefox already. Firefox 3.1b2 scores 93/100 on the Acid3 Tests. and has a JS engine that is 10% faster than the chrome's engine.

Comment #14 by: rifter on 12 Nov 2008, 19:35 GMT reply to this comment

I like opera than firefox. It is faster. Chrome has bug that needs to be fixed and google is not interested in atleast giving the alpha or stable version to the user, but throwing a beta stage for general use to the people. Cannot think how irresponsble people can be. People even do back transaction with this beta softwares and god knows what all kind of crap they end up in.

Firefox too high quality but moves like elephant. Internet explorer is hopelesslly stuck in developments stages. But I like the interface of IE8. These are only my opinion. Not any judgement against any one.

Unbiased scientific ranking (considering speed, stability, functions)
1. Firefox
2. Opera
3. Google Chrome
4. Safari
5. Internet Explorer

I agree with ruladeka's overall ranking. Why were Opera & Safari excluded from this article's evaluation?
