On Sunday, Microsoft confirmed at a press event during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that a new major update would be pushed to Windows Phone devices this spring, though it did not deliver the full set of details on what users will receive as part of it.

However, courtesy of leaked info on the matter, we can now learn more on what to expect from the update, which should land on devices as Windows Phone 8.1, rumor has it.

Some of the enhancements that users will enjoy are related to the browser included in the mobile platform, which will be Internet Explorer 11 in this case.

According to a post on Unleashthephones, IE11 in Windows Phone 8.1 will arrive with the same InPrivate browsing capabilities as its desktop counterpart.

Courtesy of this feature, users will be able to navigate the web without having their details stored in the browser data cache. For many, this might also be viewed as an increase in their online security, that’s for sure.

Moreover, the news site claims that Microsoft has decided to remove the previously imposed six-tab limit in Internet Explorer on Windows Phone.

Basically, this means that users will be able to open as many new tabs as they want, so as to enjoy a more complete surfing experience. Of course, they will be limited to the capabilities of their devices, but that is a completely different story.

On top of that, users will also be able to sync tabs between the Windows Phone 8.1 device and their Windows computers, enabling them to continue their browsing on a larger screen when needed.

One other new feature that will come to Internet Explorer 11 in Windows Phone 8.1 is the option to simply open a file, instead of only being able to save it to the handset. Improved control over downloads will certainly appeal a lot to Windows Phone users.

However, these are only some of the improvements that IE11 will bring to smartphones out there, as there will also be a Stop / Refresh button in the Address Bar, support for saving passwords, a Reading View mode, and the option to set different text sizes when reading web pages.

The Windows Phone 8.1 update will come with other enhancements as well, including on-screen buttons, more flexible hardware requirements, and support for dual-SIM devices, Microsoft unveiled during the aforementioned press event.
