Internet Explorer 11, which is currently the default Windows 8.1 browser and available for Windows 7 users as an optional download, continues its growth and could soon become the number one browser worldwide if the same ascension trend is maintained.

According to a new round of statistics provided by market researcher Net Applications for the month of February 2014, Internet Explorer 11 has grown so much lately that it’s now the second top OS worldwide with a share of 12.80 percent.

Internet Explorer 8 continues to lead the field with 21.73 percent, while Google Chrome 32 comes third with 9.86 percent. Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 10 come next with 8.80 percent and 8.04 percent, respectively.

Firefox 27 is only the sixth browser in the charts with 7.90 percent, which means that Internet Explorer 11 has managed to beat two of its most important rivals in just a few months on the market.

The growth somehow makes sense, especially because Microsoft promotes the browser as the best version ever released by the company. It’s the fastest and the most secure issue of Internet Explorer, Redmond said with several occasions.

At the same time, Internet Explorer 11 has been optimized for touch-capable devices, which means that longer battery life and reduced CPU usage should be noticed after making the move to this particular browser version.

“With IE11 we continue delivering the best performance for real world Web sites on your Windows device. IE11 on Windows 7 improves performance across the board with faster page loading, faster interactivity, and faster JavaScript performance, while reducing CPU usage and improving battery life on mobile PCs,” the company said when it officially announced Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7.

At the same time, Microsoft says that Internet Explorer 11 is 30 percent faster “than the nearest competitive browser” and even 9 percent faster than Internet Explorer 10.

Of course, Internet Explorer 11 is also the right choice for developers, as the browser comes with enhanced F12 developer tools and plenty of improvements supposed to enhance their website optimization work.

“For developers, IE11 brings increased support for modern Web standards powered by hardware acceleration to enable a new class of compelling applications and fast and fluid Web browsing. IE11 adds support for over 25 new or improved modern Web standards beyond IE10,” Microsoft explained a couple of months ago, pointing out that Internet Explorer 11 provides enhanced functionality as compared to the other browsers.
