Internet Explorer 11 was officially launched as part of Windows 8.1 in October 2013, but since then, the browser has grown so much that it's now close to becoming the number one browser in the entire world.

That's what a new set of statistics provided by market researcher Net Applications is showing, while also revealing that Internet Explorer 8 continues to lead the market with a share of 21.14 percent.

Internet Explorer 11 has managed to overtake Google Chrome 33 to become the second most-used browser worldwide with a share of 15.71 percent. Chrome ended the month with 12.67 percent.

Overall, Internet Explorer continues to dominate the browser market with a share of 57.96 percent, while Chrome is far away on the second place with 17.52 percent. Mozilla Firefox is really close with 17.26 percent and Safari and Opera are still trailing behind with 5.68 percent and 1.20 percent, respectively.

‘So what's the deal with Internet Explorer 11?’ you might ask. Microsoft says that this is the most advanced version of its in-house browser to date, packing options that make it faster and more secure than any other browser currently available to Windows users.

“With IE11 on Windows 7, customers receive a fast, secure browser that is compatible with existing Web sites and delivers exciting new interactive Web experiences. For developers, IE11 supports the latest Web standards and technologies, making it easier to build sites that work across devices. The new F12 tools in IE11 enable developers to build high performance Web experiences, faster and more efficiently,” Microsoft explained.

According to its own statistics, Internet Explorer 11 is on Windows 7 30 percent faster than all the other browsers, which should clearly make it the top option for those running what is currently the leading OS worldwide.

Internet Explorer 11 is also available on Windows 8.1 Metro with a touch-optimized interface and Microsoft claims that it has specifically tweaked this version to be easier to use and reduce battery usage on tablets. At the same time, it also provides support for up to 100 different tabs, without affecting battery life at all.

“IE11 delivers the best daily browsing experience for getting to your sites quickly and using them together with Windows Store apps in Windows 8.1. Browsing feels fast, fluid and perfect for touch with many tabs, richer suggestions, organized favorites and side-by-side experiences for comparing sites and using sites with Windows Store apps together,” it said.
