On the opening day of MIX 2011 Microsoft offered much more than the first taste of Internet Explorer 10. Participants on-site as well as those that watched the keynote address live via the web got a sneak peek at IE10 running on Windows 8.

I’ve included a screenshot in this article from the on-stage demonstration of Steven Sinofsky (President, Windows and Windows Live Division) and Dean Hachamovitch (Corporate Vice President, Internet Explorer).

It’s a glimpse at Internet Explorer 10 inside a copy of Windows running on top of machine powered by a ARM processor.

“I was running the IE10 platform preview on a machine running the ARM microprocessor,” Sinofsky stated.

“So, we've been showing some cool demos on Intel, but this is also the platform preview running in our labs on an ARM machine out back there. And you can see it says right there, processor, ARM family 7, model CO9 [Revision 100.]”

Now, in all fairness, neither Sinofsky nor Hachamovitch even mentioned Windows 8. Not that they would, since the “Windows 8” moniker is somewhat taboo as far as the software giant is concerned, even though it also is a common label for the next iteration of Windows.

However, Sinofsky did say: “So we're also hard at work on IE10 on some forward-looking things.”

Reading between the lines, it’s clear that the President of Windows is referring to the next major version of Windows.

At the start of 2011, Sinofsky offered the first demonstration of Windows vNext running on an ARM machine. At CES 2011, the Redmond company showcased an early build of Windows 8 demoing support for System-on-a-Chip architectures, ARM included.

This, combined with the MIX 2011 presentation, indicates that IE10 will be the default browser of Windows 8, although there’s no official confirmation from Microsoft.
