The latest security updates suite from Microsoft started to arrive on Windows computers this week, in an attempt to patch various vulnerabilities that were found to affect a series of Microsoft products.

Among them, one particular security bulletin came to resolve no less than 13 security issues in Internet Explorer.

The June 2012 Cumulative Security Update for IE was pushed through Windows Update to all those who had the feature enabled, and delivered Internet Explorer update version 9.0.7 to those who have the latest version of the application installed on their computers.

“This security update resolves one publicly disclosed and twelve privately reported vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer,” Tyson Storey, program manager, Internet Explorer, notes in a blog post.

“The most severe vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer. An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user.”

Those users who had their accounts configured with fewer rights on the system were less impacted by the vulnerabilities than those with administrative user rights, Storey also notes.

Users who haven’t yet applied the update should know that it was rated Critical for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9 for all Windows clients. On Windows servers, however, it was rated Moderate for these versions of the application.

“Most customers have enabled automatic updating and do not need to take any action. We recommend that customers, who have not enabled automatic updating, enable it (Start Menu, type ‘Windows Update’),” Tyson Storey notes.

Administrators, enterprise installations and users should apply this update manually if they do not have the Windows Update feature enabled. For that, they can either use update management software or can check for updates through the Microsoft Update service.

Internet Explorer 9 is available for download from Softpedia as well, via this link.
