Detecting approximately 9 out of 10 phishing sites

Internet Explorer 7 and seven other similar products were analyzed as a part of a six week long evaluation designed to determine the best overall anti-phishing accuracy. 3Sharp LLC concluded at the end of its study that Internet Explorer 7 delivers best in class anti-phishing solutions. The study, Gone Phishing: Evaluating Anti-Phishing Tools for Windows, commissioned by Microsoft and performed by 3Sharp, compared Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 with Netcraft Toolbar, Google Safe Browsing on Firefox , eBay Toolbar, Earthlink ScamBlocker, GeoTrust TrustWatch, Netscape 8.1 and McAfee Site Advisor.

"The overall results of these tests show that Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 with Phishing Filter had the best overall accuracy, resulting in an overall composite score of 172 out of a possible 200. The Netcraft Toolbar was close behind Internet Explorer 7 with a composite score of 168. Following Netcraft there was a significant gap in terms of overall effectiveness: the third-place technology scored 106 of a possible 200, while the last-place technology scored 3 of 200 Other phishing technologies analyzed include (in alphabetical order) EarthLink ScamBlocker, the eBay Toolbar, GeoTrust TrustWatch, Google Safe Browsing on Firefox, McAfee SiteAdvisor, and Netscape Browser," revealed 3Sharp.

"3Sharp LLC tested eight browser-based products to evaluate their overall accuracy in catching 100 live confirmed phishing websites over a six week period (May - July 2006) and also understand the false-positive error rate on 500 good sites. We are pleased to see that Internet Explorer 7's Phishing Filter finished at the top of 3Sharp's list as most accurate anti-phishing technology, catching nearly 9 out of 10 phishing sites while generating no warning or block errors on the 500 legitimate websites tested," Tony Chor, Group Program Manager.
