Sony made it official that its Xperia PLAY smartphone wouldn't be upgraded to the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

However, it appears that the company might have changed its heart, and that the software will eventually make its way to the gaming device.

What seems to be the Ice Cream Sandwich firmware for the Xperia PLAY has just been certified by PTCRB.

The firmware was approved on June 15th, the same as the upgrades for other 2011 Xperia phones, although Sony made no mention about it before.

As XperiaBlog notes in a recent post, chances are that Sony has finally reconsidered its decision and that it would have the OS upgrade available for users soon. However, only a formal announcement from the company will clear things up, so stay tuned.
