Security has always been an issue with the computer industry, as computer users tend to forget their passwords and lose access to various devices, or have their digital content stolen. A couple of efforts have been made in this area, in an attempt to provide consumers with a highly secure solution that can protect their computers and data. On that note, IBM and Fujitsu Frontech North America have jointly announced today the launch of a new security solution that makes use of a palm vein biometric technology, combined with an enterprise single sign-on solution, developed by Fujitsu and IBM, respectively.

“A typical organization spends hundreds of dollars per employee per year on lost passwords through help desk support,” said E.K. Koh, program director for single sign-on, IBM Tivoli software. “IBM's work with Fujitsu replaces archaic password structures with a single path of access that resides in the palms of the employees' hands, and can be managed more efficiently, saving companies thousands of dollars in IT support while protecting critical organizational data and information.”

The new solution has been designed as a mix between Fujitsu' PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR and IBM's Tivoli Access Manager for single sign-on, enabling a user to hold his or her hand on a small scanning device, connected to a computer, which will read the patterns of their palm. The palm vein identification method is said to use a highly accurate technology, featuring a near-infrared light that is capable of capturing a person's palm vein pattern.

“The combination of PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR and IBM Tivoli Access Manager for Enterprise Single Sign-On validates that strong biometric authentication is a critical component in addressing IT security and compliance requirements,” said Jim Preasmyer, director of sales and business development, Advanced Technology Group, Fujitsu Frontech of North America, Inc. “We are proud to partner with IBM, one of the leading management and single sign-on providers, to expand PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR adoption. This partnership underscores Fujitsu's commitment to partnering with world-class organizations to resolve security issues associated with lost, stolen or forgotten passwords.”

Likely to become adopted by various companies looking for an efficient and secure solution to enable access to their employees, the solution offers an alternative to traditional passwords or other security solutions.
