Although IBM seems not to hurry towards the release of an updated version of Lotus Notes, which would be compatible with Workplace, it has offered some details regarding this solution. The information has been presented within Notes Users Conference, which took place in Hanover yesterday.
The messaging application will allow the developers to create their own solutions either on the Domino platform, or on
Workplace, used independently or together. Some of the new instruments included in this version of the Lotus Notes will facilitate the sharing of information between different applications.
IBM announces that Notes 7 will only be available in the third quarter of 2005, and its successor, code-named "Hannover" will include email and instant messaging clients, as well as applications for organizing the daily schedule. Notes 8 won't be available for at least 12 months after the release of Notes 7.
The reason why IBM releases this information regarding some applications that are so far from completion is that the company desires to fight back the rumors regarding them.
Based on the demonstration carried out yesterday by IBM officials, it's been noticed that Notes includes composite-applications, showing the different approach employed by the company. A specialist from Forrester Research has stated that these plans could transform the Notes application so that it will have a much broader range of use.
