Canonical, the company behind the popular and free Ubuntu operating system, proudly announced today (July 21st) the immediate availability of a virtual appliance of IBM's DB2 Express-C software for the Ubuntu cloud computing solution. The virtual appliance can run in both public and private cloud configurations. Canonical is also proud to announce that IBM has finally completed validation of the DB2 software on the server edition of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx).

Launched in April 2010, the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) operating system came with declarations of support from over 80 organizations, and it is a very popular guest infrastructure layer on the Amazon EC2 or Rackspace cloud services. Many ISPs and private organizations are using Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud as the host cloud infrastructure layer.

Neil Levine, Vice President of Commercial Services at Canonical ensures customers that the newly released appliance is of a great value: "A virtual cloud appliance consisting of Ubuntu and DB2 Express-C will enable customers to quickly and easily set up DB2 in both public and private cloud situations. The full commercial support of DB2 running on Ubuntu and physical servers is also attractive to customers as a protection to their investment."

IMB's DB2 software supports only the LTS (Long Term Support) versions of Ubuntu. DB2 Express-C is the community edition of IMB's DB2 software and it's designed for multi-branch companies and small businesses. With features such as the pureXML technology (to power SOA-based and Web 2.0 solutions), the DB2 Express-C software is easy to use, can be set-up without difficulty and it's self-manageable.

"Customers are quickly adopting DB2 software on Linux for both on-premise and cloud computing deployments. The combination of Ubuntu and DB2 provides users with a highly integrated and tested virtual cloud appliance." said Robert S. Sutor, Vice President, Open Source and Linux, IBM Software Group.

No matter how Ubuntu is deployed on a cloud, the DB2 Express-C software will always be available!
