Do you remember Blogger, the blog service provided by Google? Well, the product was not too popular in this period but it seems like the company tried to improve it by adding an interesting notification. "Some readers of this blog have contacted Google because they believe this blog's content is hateful. In general, Google does not review nor do we endorse the content of this or any blog. For more information about this message, please consult our FAQ," the alert
says. The notification is displayed every time a user tries to visit a flagged blog and gives him the possibility to continue to the site or leave the page.
The alert was introduced some time ago but it was rarely displayed and now it forces you to select an option: continue to the page or leave it. So, what should we do? Personally, I don't see this notification too useful because some users may abuse and flag other's blogs as hateful just for fun. The function is available to all users that are currently using the NavBar, being entitled Flag As Objectionable and included in the Flag menu.
"When a person visiting a blog clicks the "Flag?" button in the Blogger Navbar, it means they believe the content of the blog may be potentially offensive or illegal. We track the number of times a blog has been flagged as objectionable and use this information to determine what action is needed. This feature allows the blogging community as a whole to identify content they deem objectionable," Google says. The most interesting fact is that your blog can be unlisted from the Blogger index if numerous users are flagging it as objectionable. So, if multiple users decide to trick me and flag the blog as hateful although it isn't, should Google unlist my page from the index? I really hope the search giant really checks the blogs they decide to flag...
