I-O Data already has quite the collection of optical storage units, among other things, but it looks like its external and portable models have now received a new sibling, dubbed BRD-UT12.

When it comes to external storage, consumers usually think of, at least at first, such things as flash drives, maybe DVDs.

Still, there are a whole bunch of external and portable devices that one can buy to complement or supplement their systems, or to carry around large data amounts more easily.

Out of these, some are made to write onto what are known as optical disks, in this case Blu-ray and DVDs.

This case refers to the newest external Blu-ray burner, known as BRD-UT12 and equipped with the most recent iteration of the Universal Serial Bus interface.

For those that do not know, the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 standard has grown very popular thanks to its theoretical maximum bandwidth of 5 Gbps.

In this instance, said data speed can achieve disk scribing speeds of up to 12x on BD-R disks, although, naturally, other formats are supported.

For those that want clarifications, this means that dual-layer Blu-ray disks will be very readily handled when the need arises.

DVDs, for instance, depending on format, can be written at up to 16x, while CDs may be scribed at a maximum of 48x.

Finally, the BRD-UT12 will have a high gloss black coating, a connection status LED (lights blue for USB 3.0 and green for USB 2.0) and 4 MB of memory.

Either way, it should prove most useful to owners of any desktop or laptop system when it becomes available, in Japan, next month (June 2011).

Once shipments start, prospective customers will need to be willing to part with the sum of $270. In the meantime, end-users can examine similar offers from Lite-On, Plextor, ASUS and others.
