Portable hard disk drives don't necessarily need to have a thickness of just 7 mm, since 9 mm units are light and thin enough to fit in a pocket, but I-O Data went that extra mile when it made the HDPU-UT Series.

The drive is a 500 GB storage device with an aluminum body and a price of 11,980 Yen (it was released in Japan).

According to exchange rates, that's the same as $116 and €82, give or take.

Sales will only begin in January though, and when they do, the US and EU prices might not be the ones that exchange rates suggest, since usually products ship for the same amount of Euro as they do dollars.

At any rate, I-O Data will provide the drive in two colors: Silver and Prussian Blue.

Both will use the USB 3.0 technology to link to desktop personal computers, tablets, laptops and whatever else.
