It only uses a USB 2.0 connection for power and it’s compatible with specific TV sets

Japanese storage expert company I-O Data just announced the launch of a new high-capacity 2 TB portable HDD model, on its official website. The new device most likely houses two 2.5” mobile hard disk drives, as it is only fueled by a single USB 2.0 cable.

A simple USB 2.0 port cannot provide enough energy to power one 3.5” HDD, so it is quite obvious why we tend to believe that there are two 2.5” HDDs inside I-O Data’s new external storage unit.

The new device is called AVHD-P2.0U and comes with special software that will format it in a manner that’s compatible with several known TV brands such as Sony, Toshiba, Sharp, etc.

The new unit is priced at $349, which is about €276 for the European buyers.

Considering that Buffalo’s 2TB external HDD unit is only $50 more expensive, we’d rather recommend Buffalo’s MiniStation over this I-O Data device, as it brings much faster USB 3.0 connection along with shock protection.
