14 DAY TRIAL // She may be only 16 years old, but Taylor Momsen is already known for her distinctive style, just like, say, Paris Hilton was once known for her fondness of using small dogs as fashion accessories. The actress and rocker shares a special bond with black eyeshadow and eyeliner, skimpy outfits and underwear as outerwear, but forging her own image would not have been possible had she not fired her own stylist.
Sitting down with MTV to talk about herself and the new album she’s putting out soon, together with her band The Pretty Reckless, Momsen says the intention was, initially, to make of her some kind of pop darling. At first, she went along with everything, which meant wearing the clothes she was told the wear, say only the right things, and do and act as instructed. Soon enough, though, she realized that if there was anything she wasn’t, that was pop.
So, she fired her stylist and took matters into her own hands as regards her image. “I kind of had a freakout…because I was getting molded into this thing that wasn’t who I am and it was fitting into the world that can make you popular or something. I was never a popular chick, so I don’t even know what that means! I still wear pieces from when I was in [expletive] middle school. I modify them,” Momsen says.
As for her beauty routine, the rocker says that, though it may seem hard to achieve her look, it’s not really too difficult a process. “I shower, then I put a ton of black on my eyes, then I put lipstick on and a little bit of blush and then, I don’t brush my hair…[I use] whatever black eyeshadow and liner – that isn’t empty – in my makeup case and charcoal it on,” she says. The entire thing doesn’t last more than a few minutes. Where fashion is concerned, Momsen makes sure she only wears clothes she’s comfortable with, even if that means stepping on a few toes when she does it.
Taylor Momsen and The Pretty Reckless’ new album, “Light Me Up,” drops in US stores in August, and will be launched in the UK the following month. The other day marked the release of a brand new video for a single lifted off it, “Miss Nothing.” Below is one fragment of the interview the star did with MTV on her unique style. Enjoy.
