Hyrule Warriors is one weird little cookie, taking the action of the legendary Dynasty Warriors hack-and-slash series and mixing it up with The Legend of Zelda's world.

The game, however, is as real as it gets, and with the occasion of the E3 gaming convention taking place in Los Angeles, a massive, 40-minute-long video detailing the action in the upcoming game, complete with developer commentary, will surely clear things up for those confused how Zelda translates into repeatedly smashing face.

Hyrule Warrriors is being made by Omega Force, the creators of the Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors video game series, with some assistance from Team Ninja, developers of the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive games.

The upcoming hack-and-slash game will feature the same large-scale encounters where players get to mow down countless enemies, starring Link in a brand-new incarnation, as a Hylian soldier undergoing training.

The main villain in the story is a witch named Shea, a former protector of the Triforce that becomes corrupted when she falls for Link. After her jealousy of Zelda becomes unbearable, she kidnaps the princess, setting the stage for a daring rescue operation. As always.

Hyrule Warriors will be playable in both single-player as well as cooperative two-player mode, where the second player will assume control of Impa, Zelda's protector, for the first time in the series.

The game is told to feature additional playable characters, apart from the two already presented, and it was revealed that players would be able to switch between equipped weapons on the fly, gaining access to new fighting abilities, just like in other Omega Force Warriors games.

Hyrule Warriors will also feature a character progression system, permitting players to evolve and increase their prowess on the battlefield, as well as various weapon upgrades, to provide even more deadly action in the face of the vast armies that will be thrown the players' way.

The gameplay footage comes courtesy of Nintendo Treehouse, who took a look at Hyrule Warriors and delivered some Q&A action with the developers during their E3 2014 coverage show.

Publisher Tecmo Koei stated that they expected the Wii U exclusive game to sell well over a million units worldwide, and we'll see how that goes when Hyrule Warriors comes out, on August 14 in Japan, on September 19 in Europe, and September 26 in North America.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata expressed his confidence that Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors all had the potential to become the hits that can turn the Wii U's fortune around, and make it a strong competitor for the Xbox One and PlaySation 4 consoles.
