ASUS is expected to bundle its laptops with the HyperSpace instant-on application, developed by Phoenix Technologies, as part of a new partnership agreement between the two companies. Users of ASUS' portable computer systems will be able to take advantage of the new operating system, which allows fast connection to the Internet and other applications, before the PC boots in a full operating system, such as Microsoft's Windows. The agreement between the two companies includes both laptops and netbooks.

“As the fastest growing notebook brand, we are committed to bring to market innovative technology solutions to simplify consumers’ lives. We are glad to see Phoenix’s PC 3.0 vision is in line with our commitment to our customers. HyperSpace’s easy-to-use, smart, instant-on and longer battery life features will allow ASUS to deliver richer, more dynamic products and satisfy our customers’ desire to make mobility a far more elegant and intuitive experience,” said Henry Yeh, general manager, ASUS Notebook Business Unit.

The HyperSpace instant-on operating system, awarded by Laptop Magazine as “Best Software” at CES 2009, allows users to gain fast access to Internet-based applications, while a full operating system is being loaded in the background. After the OS is fully loaded, the user is given the choice of switching between the two platforms, each one offering different advantages. While a full operating system, such as Microsoft's Windows, can provide better functionality, the Phoenix Technologies' HyperSpace is capable of offering a battery saving of around 25%.

Before you get your hopes up, you should take into consideration that Phoenix Technologies' platform isn't actually free, despite the fact that it comes bundled with ASUS portable computers. Users are expected to pay fees in the amount of $39.95 annually for a HyperSpace Dual Setup, designed for netbooks. The price is rather high, especially if you consider that a fully-fledged netbook comes at around $399. ASUS Laptop users will be required to pay $59.95 for 12 months of using the HyperSpace platform.
