Hyper-V Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007

Microsoft has made available for download a management pack designed to permit administrators to keep a close eye on systems running the hypervisor it launched with the RTM/SP1 build of Windows Server 2008. The Windows Server Hyper-V Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007 went live at the end of the past week on the Microsoft Download Center and is currently up for grabs. As the label of the pack indicates, the solution is designed to permit customers running System Center Operations Manager 2007 to monitor Windows Server Hyper-V systems.

“Last Friday we released the Windows Server Hyper-V Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007. This management pack supports monitoring of Windows Server Hyper-V systems. This includes monitoring coverage of Hyper-V host servers, including critical services and disks, and Hyper-V virtual machines, including virtual components and virtual hardware,” revealed J.C. Hornbeck, Microsoft Manageability Knowledge Engineer.

According to Microsoft, the release made available on June 19, 2009 comes exclusively in English, and features the following build number 6.0.6633.0. The Redmond-based company indicated that the management pack for Hyper-V could be used by customers running both System Center Operations Manager 2007 SP1 and its successor System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2. The software giant released Operations Manager 2007 R2 (build 7221) to manufacturing in the second half of May 2009, with General Availability planned for July 1, 2009.

“This management pack provides the following functionality: management of critical Hyper-V services that affect virtual machines and host server functionality; management of host server logical disks that affect virtual machine health; full representation of virtualization in a single Hyper-V host server, including virtual networks, virtual machines, and guest computers; monitoring of virtual machine hardware components that affect availability,” Hornbeck added.
