Hynix Semiconductor, one of the leaders in dynamic random access memory chips (DRAM), announced that, in order to increase its revenues,
a new division will be created within the company, one which will be specialized in designing, selling and manufacturing the memory graphics applications, according to X-bit Labs.

If Hynix succeeds in taking over part of the market share presently 'owned' by the leaders in GDDR manufacturing - Samsung and Qimonda - the producer might obtain not only a significant profits increase, but also a 'fresh image' in the eyes of the challengers and, moreover, of the investors.

"The task force, which consists of 150 regular and executive employees, will be in charge of designing and producing graphic memory chips," Hynix officials are quoted as saying by Korea Times news-paper.

This GDDR division will make sure that Hynix will be the first one to ship such graphics applications on the market, before the leader in GDDR production - Samsung Electronics.

GDDR was developed especially for operations taking place at high speeds and point-to-point interconnections in order to provide extreme bandwidth for the latest graphics processing units (GPUs), making it pretty expensive, as it is produced in small amounts.

GDDR-class memory is developed also for gaming consoles, and we all know what this means, as we are talking about a market which is worth tens of millions of dollars, being one of the most lucrative of them all.

In addition, it is said that ATI Technologies is expected to use this kind of memory (GDDR4) for its R580 latest announced product. It seems also that ATI will soon be under AMD's umbrella, as the latter intends to take over the graphics manufacturer's business and, obviously, its brand name.
