Hydrogen Powered Cars Will Save Lives

Most of us know that by using fossil fuels we are slowly but surely destroying our atmosphere and implicitly our health. And one of the biggest sources of pollution resulted from fossil fuels is represented by cars. The solution is relatively simple: switching to hydrogen fuel-cells.

In a recent study published on Thursday, it was shown that by switching to this solution, we would have better air quality, less destructive climatic effects, in
conclusion a healthier life.

Using hydrogen-based fuel-cells means striking at the very heart of pollution and eliminating all greenhouse gases. Aside from these environmental advantages, there is also a financial aspect that has to be considered: the elimination of economic dependence.

Fuel cell vehicles using hydrogen produced by wind and naturalgas offer the greatest potential health benefits, and could save 3,700 to 6,400 lives annually in the United States by reducing air pollution.

But not all hydrogen technologies are environment friendly. The researchers reported that using coal to make hydrogen would actually produce more greenhouse gases than if all U.S. drivers switched to gas/electric hybrid vehicles like those currently on the market.

The most nonpolluting method of producing hydrogen is by using wind electrolysis.

"We concluded that if you generate hydrogen from wind or natural gas you get a clear benefit over gas/electric hybrid vehicles, though hybrids would also represent an improvement over the current fleet," Mark Jacobson, an associate professor at Stanford University, said.

I think that all reports indicating hydrogen as the best ecologically correct substitute for gasoline are ignorant and wrong. Ethanol is, and has always been, the most obvious substitute because it is produced from sugar cane and requires the exact same gasoline engine, tuned differently, to be used. This fuel has been used in countries like Brazil for decades now and most of the new cars there will run on an any-ratio mixture of gasoline and ethanol. For some reason someone in the USA is trying to make money on hydrogen technology and silencing the blunt and obvious truth.

Although ethanol is a good TEMPORARY substitute, it is not a very good solution to the energy crisis. Ethanol continues to put carbons into the air and destroying out o-zone. The point of hydrogen is that you would eliminate all carbon gases from vehicles. As I said before, ethanol is a good temporary solution, or a "quick fix" if you will, it is much better than crude oil but it is not the solution.

Switching to hydrogen fuel cells isn't as you say "relatively simple" nor is hydrogen an actual solution. Hydrogen fuel cells are just batteries. Burning less coal (or burning it more efficiently) and using more renewable power sources like wind will reduce polution. Hydrogen fuel cells don't deserve the credit for saving lives. Using cleaner power generation does.

Using fossil fuel is not "destroying" our atmosphere. While fossil fuels are a major source of air pollution, our atmosphere does a remarkably good job of returning to a natural state when the polluting source is reduced sufficiently to allow it to do so. Hydrogen based vehicles are not a simple solution, since no simple solution would require a completely new fuel infrastructure, replacement of all existing vehicles, and no practical means to produce hydrogen as a fuel in sufficient quantity to replace gasoline, diesel, and jet fuels without using another fossil fuel: CNG.

The real solution for pollution isn't hydrogen: it's cleaner gasoline vehicles. These are available today. Consumers just need to buy them. Cars that meet SULEV or ULEV standards drastically lower pollution compared to the average vehicle on the road today. Hydrogen-based vehicles won't be a viable solution in the foreseeable future, since you won't be able to buy one anytime soon, nor afford it when they initially become available, nor find fuel for it at a price competitive to fossil fuels.
