Hutchison 3G Austria, subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa, has recently enhanced its network, allowing its subscribers to benefit from faster and more reliable mobile Web browsing. The upgrade was made by Nokia Siemens Networks which, in order to improve Hutchison 3G's network, used its flat-network solution, especially developed to work with high-speed data traffic.

Nokia Siemens Networks leveraged on an innovative "direct tunnel functionality", which simplifies Hutchison's packet core network and enables the user-Web data flow to run faster. With the new solution, Hutchison 3G will be offering its Austrian customers a high-performance network that's prepared for the future technologies to be deployed in the following years (LTE among them).

Hutchison 3G will also benefit from Nokia Siemens Networks' NetAct solution that helps the operator bring its network performance to a maximum level.

Talking about the new deal with Nokia Siemens, Jan Trionow, CTO of Hutchison 3G Austria, said: "To provide our subscribers with state-of-the-art online services, along with high-quality voice, we needed a solution that would help expand network capacity without major infrastructure expansion. The flat network solution from Nokia Siemens Networks means fewer network elements, better performance, greater flexibility and lower operational costs."

Dietmar Appeltauer, Head of Central East Europe at Nokia Siemens Networks, completed: "This implementation confirms our leadership in wide scale global direct tunnel deployments. The extensive testing by Hutchison 3G Austria and live experience further verified positive results from our earlier deployments."

With only about 0.5 million customers, Hutchison 3G is currently the fourth largest mobile operator in Austria, after A1, T-Mobile and One. This is mainly due to the fact that Hutchison 3G only offers UMTS and HSDPA services, while all the other three carriers also have GSM networks, hence also a wider coverage.
