Superstorm Sandy has plunged New York City and the East Coast into complete darkness. Millions of people had to spend their second night in the dark, with the power outage believed to last at least a couple of days more.

The situation in Manhattan is perhaps the most severe in this respect, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a press conference, as cited by the Daily Mail.

Overall, around 750,000 people across New York were left without power, but the tally goes up to seven million all over the East Coast.

“We expected an unprecedented impact storm here in New York City and that's what we got. It was a devastating storm, maybe the worst we have ever experienced,” Bloomberg said.

The Mayor believes the outage in Manhattan, presumably caused by a series of explosions at the Con Edison Power Plant, could last up to a week.
