While the 80Plus Gold rating is thought by some to be the highest one that a PSU may attain, that is not so, as 80 Plus Platinum also exists, although very few power supplies have earned it, like a certain new product from Huntkey.

CES may have been in full swing last week, but Huntkey, back in Shenzen, China, issued a press release of its own, to announce its latest achievement.

Simply put, the new X7 500 W PSU meets the requirements imposed by the 80Plus testing methods in order to grant the 80Plus Platinum certification.

For those interested in such things, the specification for Platinum were finalized by the 80Plus organization in October, 2009.

The requirements for the 80Plus Gold rating are already high enough, but Platinum needs the unit to demonstrate an efficiency of at least 90% at 20%, 92% at 50% and 89% at 100% loads.

Huntkey's creation quite deftly complied with those demands by showing off percentages of 90.63%, 92.62% and 90.31%, respectively.

"We are in pursuit of finding the best solution for end-users not only for electric bills saving, but also for environmental protection. Huntkey 500W 80PLUS PLATINUM certified power supply is a new step for this goal," Huntkey global product manager Villa Li said.

The feat was achieved thanks to a collaboration between the company and experts from Infineon.

"This is our first time to cooperation with Infineon's experts. However it is an impressive and nice cooperation. Their focus on professional field is admirable. We want to show our greatly appreciation for them," stated a Huntkey spokesman.

Unfortunately, the official announcement did not hold any sort of information on the price of this new product.

No doubt it will be only accessible to enthusiasts that have a solid financial backing, as not just performance and efficiency, but also the rarity of Platinum-compliant PSUs, will play a part in the choosing of a price tag.
