1 million readers cast their vote, “Twilight” takes a beating

There are countless movies to look forward to in 2012 and, without a doubt, every one of us has their own ranking for which one is the most anticipated. One million people have cast their vote in the annual MTV poll for NextMovie, naming “Hunger Games” as the top release of the year.

Many of you might not agree with that but, as the saying goes, the people have spoken: and they decided that 2012 will be a battle between “Hunger Games” and the final installment of “The Twilight Saga,” “Breaking Dawn Part 2.”

As is tradition with various media outlets (us included), MTV comprised year-end polls for highlights of the year that's about to end – and estimates for the upcoming one.

While 2011 was marked by the battle between “Harry Potter” and “Twilight,” with the former winning by an inch, 2012 won't be the year of “Twilight” either.

There's a new player on the scene and it's getting all movie buffs to pay attention: the big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel “The Hunger Games.”

“In the race for the Movie Most Looked Forward To in 2012, 'The Hunger Games' beat 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' 51% to 45%, with 'The Avengers,' 'The Dark Knight,' 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and 'The Hobbit' – generally considered to be four of the biggest releases of the upcoming year – combining for just 4% of the vote,” MTV informs.

One might argue that MTV's audience of today is also the same audience that pays to see “Twilight” films, which means results are skewed – and one could make a solid point with it.

The other results in the poll confirm, beyond a single trace of doubt, that all things “Twilight” are very popular, from the three leads (Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner) to the story and the characters.

It's no wonder industry insiders say Summit Entertainment made the smartest business decision ever when it picked Stephenie Meyer's original novels to be made into film.

Below are the other results from the MTV polls. As noted above, over 1 million people took part in them.
