Hulu Labs has released Hulu Desktop, a "lean-back viewing experience for your personal computer," as the developers explain. The software features a sleek interface that has been optimized for use with Apple or Windows Media Center remote controls, "allowing you to navigate Hulu's entire library with just six buttons."
Requiring an Intel Core Duo 2.4GHz (or equivalent) processor, at least 2 GB of RAM, Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later, 2 Mbps Internet connection or greater, and
Flash 9.0.124, Hulu Desktop runs directly on your computer and does not require a web browser, Hulu Labs explains. The application acts as an alternative to browsing and viewing content from the Hulu Library on the user's computer.
“Generally speaking the Hulu library on Hulu.com will be available through Hulu Desktop,” Hulu Labs further outlines, shedding light on whether the content on Hulu.com will be available on Hulu Desktop. “While our goal is to have the same content library available on through all of our distribution channels, we work together with our partners to determine availability of their content on these various channels,” the company states.
No account is required to use Hulu Desktop. However, users may, nonetheless, login to Hulu Desktop and access their queue, history, subscriptions, playback quality and closed captioning preferences. Users should note that profile details, privacy settings and friends are not accessible from Hulu Desktop.
As far as the remote control support goes, the desktop application will work with Apple and Windows Media Center remotes, Hulu Labs confirms. “Remotes that are compatible with Windows XP and Vista can be purchases at most electronics retailers,” the company says. Unfortunately for Linux users, the software is yet to be optimized for the platform. Other devices, such as iPhone and ipod touch, aren't supported either.
Also on the downside is that the Hulu video library can only be streamed from within the United States. Still, the company pledges to do everything in its power to make content available worldwide.
“Given the international background of the Hulu team, we have both a professional and personal interest in bringing Hulu to a global audience,” the company assures users of its video streaming services. “If you'd like, please leave us your email address and the region in which you live, and we will email you when our videos are available in your area,” says Hulu Labs.
