The last weekend in August wasn't a very happy one all round - there seems to be something in the air these days, otherwise I can't explain the grim news that's been pouring in. First Owen Wilson tries to kill himself and now more news come of a near-fatal accident involving Hulk Hogan's son Nick.

He was involved in a serious car crash in Clearwater, Florida, and was rushed to hospital in serious condition. Nick Bollea (his father's true name) was driving a yellow Toyota Supra at high speed on Court Street, which is one of the main streets in downtown Clearwater, when he lost control of the car. It flipped over and hit a palm tree full on. Bollea was reportedly driving very fast and was accompanied by a friend who was in the passenger seat next to him. Clearwater Police spokesman Wayne Shelor reports that "the car was destroyed".

Take a look at the photo and you'll see that 'destroyed' is a bit of an understatement. The Police and paramedics who responded at the scene reportedly needed to use a hydraulic rescue tool known as a Hurst tool (nicknamed "jaws of life") to remove the two young boys from the car. Nick and his friend were rushed to Bayfront Medical Center, a trauma center. And apparently, Nick's friend was pronounced to be in 'critical" state, while Nick's state, even though slightly less desperate, was still labeled as "serious". Also, the circulation on the street where the accident happened had to be stopped for several hours.

The cause of the accident - even though no one's made any official statement yet - seems to be excessive speed. And while I'm in no mood to lecture anyone, looks like this weekend was a Hollywood lesson in "why it's sometimes bad to be even slightly famous". I'm saying this in the light of the recent shocking news about Owen Wilson trying to commit suicide - it doesn't pay to lose control of your life and take crazy decisions or crazy chances. And even though we all love a good train wreck (no pun intended) from time to time, we'd much rather it were Lindsay Lohan getting some in a rehab bathroom than people driving too fast or trying to do themselves it. This isn't aimed at convincing anyone to become a Lohan fan (God forbid!) but it feels a lot better writing about fashion faux pas than about stars seriously messing up their lives and finding themselves at an inch from death.
