To many fans, Hugh Jackman was born to play Wolverine. As these things go, he was not the director’s first choice for the iconic character, the Aussie himself admits in a recent interview.

As hard as it might seem to believe at first, director Bryan Singer’s first choice for Wolverine was Russell Crowe.

He turned down the part but recommended his friend Jackman instead, which is how he came in the running in the first place.

“Russell has given me advice several times at key moments in my life that helped with my career. I also owe him because two of the biggest roles I've ever had in my life, he turned down – and suggested me for them,” Jackman says.

“On ‘X-Men,’ he was Bryan Singer's first choice for Wolverine. And he mentioned me also for [Baz Luhrmann's] ‘Australia’,” the actor further says.

Until the new Wolverine film, titled simply “The Wolverine,” comes in theaters next year, Jackman and Crowe will be seen sharing the same screen in the highly anticipated “Les Miserables,” which is already getting plenty of Oscar buzz.
