Whether we like to admit it or not, the fact of the matter is that we all make mistakes in our lives. The good news is that, every once in a while, these mistakes turn out to be downright hilarious.

For instance, reports say that, not long ago, a police officer in the UK seized several suspicious-looking packages because he was convinced that they contained marijuana.

Unfortunately for this officer and his reputation, however, this wasn't really the case. On the contrary, the packages that he seized all contained nothing but potpourri.

How the packages ended up in police custody

This rather amusing incident played out in Staffordshire, UK. The police officer who seized the packages says that he did so after he was contacted by a local depot and told that 10 of the boxes kept in storage there were releasing a rather strong smell.

Having arrived at the parcel sorting depot in question, the officer, whose identity remains a mystery, sniffed the packages himself and concluded that they did, in fact, smell like marijuana. Hence, he decided to confiscate them.

The man then requested the presence of a police sniffer dog to help him inspect the boxes and even told his colleagues that he had just made the absolute biggest drug bust of his career. Little did he know that, strong smell aside, there was nothing suspicious about these boxes.

Officers were left speechless when they opened the packages

When the Staffordshire police officer and his colleagues finally got around to opening the 10 boxes, it became clear why it was that, despite being face to face with them, the sniffer dog made to assist with this case was simply ignoring them.

Thus, it was discovered that, rather than containing marijuana, the 10 boxes all contained potpourri. More precisely, it is said that, all in all, the packages contained a total of 8 kilograms (18 pounds) of dried flower petals.

Having come to terms with the harsh realization that he had made a mistake when seizing the packages, the police officer was left with no choice but to take the boxes back to the parcel sorting depot.
