Huckabee: Newtown School Shooting Happened Because “We Removed God from Schools”

SHARE:

Adjust text size:

As an entire nation mourns after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee says the blame for it lies with all of us who have removed God from schools.

Speaking with Fox News after the shooting that ended with 27 dead, among which 20 children and the gunman himself, Huckabee says this is not something that gun control can prevent.

See the video above for his explanation.

As for how God could allow such a tragedy to take place, Huckabee says we have brought this on ourselves.

“We've systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools have become a place for carnage because we've made it a place where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, responsibility, accountability?” he asks.

We should not turn to God only after the deed is done, he continued, but welcome Him into our lives at all times.

While many think his comments are reasonable, there are also angry voices online pointing out that Huckabee is not showing a trace of empathy for the victims’ families by saying these things.

I think Huckabee is correct, we have no respect for God which leads to no respect for
others.

Many of those folks hurt or killed in this horrible crime, did believe, know, and love God. Many, many people prayed. (These were children for Godsake! How dare you?)
I know and love God. So I find myself speechless at your stupid, insensitive comment. You have no right to suggest when people should turn to God. Secondly, I believe in our constitution and love my country. Because we are free to believe as we see fit, we must also respect those who believe in other faiths that are different from our own. Because schools are publicly funded, we cannot impose one belief system. Your job as a parent is to teach your faith to your children. I have supported you for a long time Mr. Huckabee. That ended today.

YES MR. HUCKABEE IS ABSOULELY RIGHT. WHEN WE HAD PRAYER IN THE SCHOOL NOTHING LIKE THIS EVER CAME CLOSE TO HAPPENING. I FEEL FOR THE VICTIMS I CRIED MOSTLY ALL DAY BUT TAKING GOD OUT OF OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM WAS A BIG MISTAKE.

No, of course gun control could not have prevented it. What? Human's taking responsibility for controlling what happens in their lives and societies? Never, . . . it's out of our hands. Trust the gigantic fairy in sky. Talk about him all the time, constantly mouth these stupid platitudes, . . . that will fix everything. What nonsense! What a complete, stupid, irresponsible boob Mike Huckabee is!

Comment #9 by: eddiecar on 15 Dec 2012, 06:46 UTC reply to this comment

Absolutely true as a general statement. We do not know enough yet to account for why this person killed innocent people; but it is true that belief in God is being taken out of the public arena, taken out of schools, and the pronouncements agains faith and God are louder than ever before... considering that God is Love, how can less of Him result in anything good?

I agree with Mike Huckabee we have taken God Out of Schools and our Lives Basically.

Comment #11 by: Help Us Lord on 15 Dec 2012, 06:55 UTC reply to this comment

I think Huckabee's comment is being taken out of context. What he is saying is that a prayerful person will not get into these kinds of ugly cold blooded behavior. huckabee;s comments are targeting how to prevent future killings. A person with no fear of God in their heart is most likely to do anything to anybody than one that truly, i mean truly fears God. People have done terrible things to me but i forgave them knowing that God expects me to forgive. When we as a nation, raise children and instill in them that they came from the animal kingdom be it ape or whatever, then that person has no God given value for human life. This detestable young man that committed these horrible crimes sure did not learn and apply the ten commandments, for he would have been afraid to act against the living God. This is a horrible tragedy and raising more Godless children is not going to a good answer. Gun control or no gun control people need to reevaluate our value system as a society that cares more for things than a human life. Children are a copy of the value system that they are raised in. When i was growing up, i dare not dream of talking back to my mother, my teachers or a police officer. Why condemn Huckabee for telling us the truth. We need to reverence God in our lives and have pure love for one another. If i love you, i will not under any circumstances do anything to hurt you or your property. The bible tells us that God is love and in him there is nodarkness or hatred.--I pray that the God of mercy will come between these families and grief. I pray that the lord will lift their heavy burden and undertake for them in ways that only he can. WHAT A HORRIBLE EVENT. I could not stop crying.

God is saddned by our actions and political trends but I do not believe he allowed the school deaths because of anger. Religion removed from our lives is the sad fact of our want it now generation. This was the act of a madman and nothing more. He wanted to end his pathetic life and is now in hell cause children are God's favorite things. Why can't these bastards simply kill themselves and leave the resst of us out?

Huckabee is absolutely correct. People that attack him are part of the problem with our society today. No respect for the sanctity of life is a growing problem. What can anyone expect in a society that condones and legalizes the taking of human life? No doubt, many people will attack this belief. Until our society can return to a sense of what is right and what is wrong, the senseless rampage like these killings will continue. Take away guns, take away knives...it won't matter until our society purges evil from its sensibilities. Pray for the innocents who lost their lives and for forgiveness from God.

Comment #20 by: Common Sense on 15 Dec 2012, 07:30 UTC reply to this comment

Huckabee is a money grubbing, bigoted fool who has to keep spouting off to stay in the spotlight. I thought God was everywhere and controlled everything, but you're saying he's not now because he's been "removed" from schools. Make up your narrow, weak mind.

Comment #21 by: Joe on 15 Dec 2012, 07:35 UTC reply to this comment

MIKE HUCKABEE IS RIGHT ON TARGET: GOD IS NOT THE CAUSE, GOD IS LOVE ---WE ARE THE CAUSE BECAUSE OF OUR IGNORANCE OF " MORAL LAW" WHICH IS MORE REAL THAN SECULAR LAW, AND IN THE FUTURE , THIS TRUTH WILL PREVAIL WITH WORLD "INTELLECTUALS" WHEN THEY GROW OUT OF THEIR FETAL SPIRITS INTO A REAL PERSON , A SON OF GOD----SOONER OR LATER , WE WILL ALL KNOW THE REAL TRUTH !

mike is dead right. these are the generations now growing up without god being allowed in schools or even having a christmas break. Its a winter break or winter holiday. When we all followed the ways taught by believing in god these kind of things didnt happen.

Elliot
Well now, I find it interesting that you and Mike Huckabee are promoting the same solution to the problem that contributed to this horrific act of evil. No! I did not mis read your comments or his. You see the concept of a God-no matter where you go in this world-is about his or hers teachings on how to live our lives. That is what is missing in society today. As you said, God isn’t required for learning. But God’s teachings about life, accountability, and responsibility are. Look around, people live their lives as individuals-now more than being a part of a family. It is all about me...me…me!
Both you and Mike Huckabee are so set in your concept of God …his being pro and your sounding con-that it is an example of the whole gun control debate. I am pro-gun ownership. But I do not have one at this time. I am also pro- gun control that I believe a longer background check and waiting period should be necessary. I am also a father...one that received that dreaded 3 a.m. phone with someone at the other end telling me my son had been shot.
You ask who has the right to define what God someone else believes in. The answer is No one! But as a society that was once founded and built on Christian principles and teachings…we the people have the right to define what our children learn and are taught in our public schools. The trouble is, there seems to be a lack of will on the part of parents to be or stay involved.
So, Elliot you are both right in your own way. This is a discussion that we as Americans need to have across the county. This Elliot is a good start...but sadly for those 20 children we are too late.

This is just about the sickest thing I have heard since I heard about the shooting. Hucklebee should be taken off the air and never be allowed to speak in public again

Dear Mr. Huckabee,
I wholeheartedly agree with you in the moral chaos we are in. We do need to teach to our impressionable young children/adults that God and moral decency is a factor in our life that should never be ignored, but highly honoured, respected and cherished. God should always be welcomed into our lives and total trust and respect in what we are to be expected to live by daily. I do hope and pry that this is a valuable lesson to us all, that we all need to be very supportive of this by 1.) praying daily. 2.) suggesting that our church leaders become a bit more proactive within the local communities to start campaining for prayer, communal counseling and supportive actvity that promotes not only daily pryer for help and guidance, but for daily thanksgiving as well.

Not at all - he has it exactly correct. And, if you don't understand why you should check your moral compass.

Comment #27.2 by: St.George on 16 Dec 2012, 21:09 GMT

He says this sort of thing because he is looking for attention and the increased audience that it will pull to Fox News and increase his visibility. He has shown himself time and again to be a hypocritical, self-serving * -hard. Don't expect anything else.

How about god?
Darwin was right, this guy has certainly evolved from apes!
Just banish the right to wear arms, just like all civilized countries, and these things can not happen anymore.

Comment #29 by: Reader on 15 Dec 2012, 13:37 UTC reply to this comment

Huckabee was specifically ASKED about God in the situation, he didn't introduce the topic. And this headline is misleading. He didn't say this tragedy happened because...he said that if the idea of LIFE and ETERNITY, RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY were taught in schools, should we be surprised that these things are happening. Watch it again with a clear mindset instead of the set up of the headline. What do you hear? I'm not a Huckabee fan, but neither do I appreciate when words are twisted by the media and then repeated as fact. How sad that we cannot just judge what we hear for ourselves, rather than repeating what we 'heard'.

Comment #30 by: booboosusan on 15 Dec 2012, 14:37 UTC reply to this comment

Wait, Mr. Huckabee, are you saying that schools are evil in themselves or that the children are evil? Oh wait a minute Mr. Huckabee I get it, you are using a tragedy to promote your own religious political agenda on others instead of showing any kind of empathy for the families involved! WOW! I can't belive how low some politicians will stoop to try and impress the religious fanatics that they believe vote for them. I guess next he will say that Jesus had it coming when he was crucified, If he had believed in his father a little more God would have saved him! What a waste of taxpayers money to pay this man to think and influence others.

I don't know who could possibly think his comments are reasonable. He is a great walking advertisement for atheism.

Comment #32 by: Secret pray on 15 Dec 2012, 16:35 UTC reply to this comment

God is everywhere,When Daniel ,in the old testament was in captivity, yet He was able to communicate with his God. We can commune with God without opening our mouth in school or anyplace we choose, in other words think on Him..

Comment #33 by: Ronk25 on 15 Dec 2012, 16:37 UTC reply to this comment

Mike Huckabee has it almost correct. He's partially there. This & other shootings (such as Columbine) have occurred because of a tremendous decline in our country's moral culture which is primarily driven by the Movie, Television, Radio and the Music Industry in general. And, if we want to attack the real ROOT CAUSE of these problems - this is where we must begin. And, that correction is very long OVER DUE. I believe our civilization depends on it.

Comment #34 by: justme on 15 Dec 2012, 17:38 UTC reply to this comment

Gov Huckabee is 100% correct, this is a message to all of us Americans Taking God out of averything that this country was established upon by the forfathers of this country. These things will continuallyhappen which is not a happy thought. They have taken God out of the pledge of alleglance, The disciples of saturn says to take the word of God out of government buildings and schools, no praying in public places, So why are we horrorfied when we hear such trageies. My heart goes out for the loved one who suffered such a lost , that can never be recovered.

Comment #35 by: Slip on 15 Dec 2012, 17:50 UTC reply to this comment

The Governor is right, we have a breakdown of society. The family structure has broken down, we have turned away from religion and our morals have eroded. Gun control will only place guns in the hands of criminals and deny them to the law abiding citizens. The making of a gun is not a top secret formula, if a mad man wants to kill he will find a way, hence the knife attacks in China. Its time to realize security is needed for our children and citizens at school and the work place. A metal detector and armed security guards may have stopped this heinous act. We all must take responsibility for our safety, the police cannot be everywhere at once.

Comment #36 by: Upset on 15 Dec 2012, 20:06 UTC reply to this comment

I dont feel that removing GOD from the schools is to blame. If you dont have God in your home and teach your children about God than no matter where you are this is going to happen.

Comment #37 by: SophistiKat on 23 Dec 2012, 19:43 UTC reply to this comment

LOL, logic has failed on this one! I can't belive he's actually implying that God punished innocent children because of secularism...either God is an evil * or Huckabee's an idiot! I'm thinking the latter...
