Leading provider of next-generation telecommunications network solutions Huawei announced on Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the launch of the first HSPA+ smartphone in the world running under Google's Android operating system, the U8800. According to the company, the new device is expected to become available for purchase in the third quarter of the ongoing year, and should be able to offer high-speed Internet access, faster than what 3G smartphones can deliver today.

The new U8800 from Huawei comes to the market with the Android 2.1 platform on board, and sports HSPA+ capabilities that top downlink speeds of up to 14 Mb/s, which means that its users can download a movie of 400Mb within thirty seconds. Moreover, the device comes with a 3.8-inch wide screen, offering a broader field of vision, and delivering a consistent experience over the phone's features and Internet applications.

Kevin Tao, CEO, Huawei Device, said “The customized Android smartphones reflect our long-term investment to develop high-end devices which enable operators to deliver enhanced and differentiated mobile services. Android being open to third party programs means that operators can add a number of various applications to the phone. The U8800 enables operators to provide tailor-made, stylish and affordable smartphones to their subscribers.”

In addition, Huawei also revealed that it showcased three additional Android-powered handsets at the MWC conference. Among them, we can count the U8300, the U8100 and the U8110. The first of them comes with a QWERTY keypad and three color options, namely green, yellow and purple. The second and the third are entry level devices, with 2.8-inch wide QVGA touchscreens, 3.2-megapixel cameras, Wi-Fi and more, and both should land in the second quarter of the ongoing year.

At the same time, the company also brings its Android-based HID at the MWC show, called the SmaKit S7. The device “has a 7-inch wide screen with a resolution of 800 x 480. It supports information-sharing across screens to present the same content simultaneously on computers, mobile phones and TV screens. The SmaKit S7 tablet allows users to easily access local information, visit social networking websites and shop from online application stores. To provide end-users with an integrated home solution, Smakit S7 can be connected to home gateway, TV or Android handsets.”
