Huawei doesn't want to compromise life cycle

Last month we told you that increasingly vocal Huawei President Yu Chengdong trolled competing Chinese companies like Xiaomi and Meizu for their use of 2K displays in their flagship phones.

He highlighted the fact that the Mi Note Pro relies on a relatively skimpy 3,000 mAh battery life which is unable to fairly put up with the demands of the powerful QHD display.

So judging by the comments made by the Huawei official, we shouldn't expect to see 2K smartphones coming out from Huawei in the near future, although some of the company’s upcoming flagships like the (Ascend) Mate 8 and (Ascend) D8 have been leaked online with 2K displays.

Huawei's Kevin Ho says nay to 4K displays and maybe to 2K

Well, the folks of FoneArena talked to Huawei’s President of Handset Product line, Kevin Ho, who explained why the company would not be adopting next-gen displays with 4K resolution. Interestingly enough, he didn’t seem to be against the idea of 2K handsets, unlike his colleague.

Ho said that 4K could be awesome on a tablet, but on a smaller device coming with a screen of five to six inches, human eyes can’t even discern the difference between this standard and 2K.

The thing is 4K is very power-hungry, so putting such a panel on top of a display will shrink down battery life down to just half a day, unlike the 2K panel which is able to sustain a day or more.

4K has four times the pixel population of a full HD, so power consumption will also increase up to 4 to 8 times, negatively impacting the life cycle of the handset.

Even so, Huawei doesn't totally rule out the possibility of putting a 4K panel on a phone sometime in the future. However, one needs to think about compromises first and whether human eyes are actually able to tell the difference. If not, upgrading to this standard won’t really make a difference.
