Chinese handset maker Huawei announced its new flagship smartphone recently, during a special event in London, UK. Having dropped the Ascend moniker, the new handset is now referred to as Huawei P8.

But the real star of the event was the P8max, a unique device that goes beyond the threshold between smartphones and tablets.

The reason is simple: Huawei P8max boasts a huge 6.8-inch display that almost puts it in the tablets category. The P8max was especially designed for the Chinese market and will come with specs similar to those of the company's flagship smartphone, the P8, but it adds some improvements into the mix.

The phone's 6.8-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display supports full HD (1080p) resolution and 324ppi (pixel per inch). Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating is included as well.

On the inside, Huawei P8max is equipped with a HiSilicon Kirin 935 chipset that accommodates two quad-core processors: 2.2GHz Cortex-A53 and 1.5GHz Cortex-A53.

SLR camera technology and huge 4,360 mAh battery

Given the huge display, Huawei has decided to include a large 4,360 mAh battery, which is supposed to provide up to 15 hours of video playback, 15 hours of Internet browsing, or 60 hours of music playback.

The P8max packs a 13-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which features autofocus, dual-tone flash, and a professional-grade Image Signal Processor, which is specific to the technology found in SLR camera.

There's also a secondary 5-megapixel camera on the front, which should be great for selfies, as well as video calls.

According to Huawei, the P8max comes with dual-SIM and dual standby for China Mobile and China Unicom carriers, as well as support for 4G download speed of 300Mbps.

Huawei P8max will ship with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop operating system right out of the box and Emotion UI on top. The phablet will go on sale sometime in May for €549, whereas the premium version will cost €649.

The Chinese company has confirmed that its Huawei P8max flagship smartphone will be launched in more than 30 countries in the coming months.
