Huawei plans to launch new affordable Honor smartphone

Huawei’s Honor phone lineup represents the company’s effort to emulate Xiaomi’s business model by offering affordable yet not excessively underpowered handsets.

It appears that Huawei is planning to expand its business abroad, more specifically to Russia, where the device maker is also looking to unveil a new handset. Pictures depicting the device have already surfaced in the media, showing us a smartphone with almost invisible bezels.

While we didn't have a lot of information related to the mystery handset a few days ago, the folks at GSM Arena have received further details about it, alongside additional real-life images of the device and a camera sample.

Say hello to the Huawei Honor Cherry

It turns out that the upcoming Huawei phone will be called “Cherry,” although this is probably only a codename and the model will be rolled out on the market under a different name.

We’re being told that the new model will be powered by a Kirin 620 chipset built on a 28nm processor that features an octa-core Cortex A53 and Mali-450MP4 GPU, and it will also come with 150Mbps LTE connectivity.

The camera sample is at 7MP resolution, even if it seems like a crop that came from a 4,160 x 2,336px image (also a crop, width characteristic of a 13MP sensor). The EXIF info reveals f/2.0 aperture and 1/3.2” sensor.

This is in concurrence with an earlier report which claimed we would see a 13MP/5MP camera combo on the phone. The device was also said to bring forth a 5-inch display, dual-SIM support, and a 2,550 mAh battery (the same one we can find on board the Galaxy S6).

The source claims the powerhouse inside will be able to sustain up to 51 hours of moderate usage and 28 hours of more heavy use.

Judging by the three Android navigation buttons we can peek at, the Honor Cherry phone will most likely run Google’s latest Lollipop with Emotion UI on top.

Bezels are back in the game

The phone in today’s leaks looks a little different from the one we saw before. For starters, the almost inexistent bezel is gone, being replaced by one that it’s actually pretty visible. We’re also being shown the phone in black, not in white.

Anyway, Huawei’s new Honor handset is expected to go on sale for around $261 / €241. We're not sure when the phone will make its debut, but given the consistent leaks, it shouldn't be long.
