Right on schedule, Huawei finally pulled the Honor 6 Plus smartphone out of the box, which touts one of the most interesting smartphone camera around today.

We’ve seen a bunch of samples detailing the new camera’s capabilities and they were pretty impressive, to say the least.

This week, the handset went official so we’ll be able to share with you detailed information about the device.

The Huawei Honor 6 Plus is quite a disruptive device

But first things first. The Honor 6 Plus comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p display and a 1.8GHz octa-core Kirin 925 chipset from Huawei’s own garden (as seen at Gizmo China).

The Kirin 925 is an octa-core 32-bit SoC (4 x ARM Cortex A15 and 4 x ARM Cortex A7) fitted with Mali-T628 MP4 GPU and support for Cat. 6 LTE networks.

The smartphone packs a hearty 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage plus a microSD slot that allows for memory expansion. Life on board of this powerful beast is maintained by a hefty 3600 mAh battery unit that will sustain a long enough power cycle.

Don’t expect the Honor 6 Plus to be the sleekest handset out there, but given the fact that it sports a 5.5-inch diagonal, you shouldn’t be you shouldn't be surprised. Its measurements are 150.46 x 75.68 x 7.5 mm / 5.9 x 2.9 x 0.29 inches.

And now, for the juicy part. Huawei added a 5MP front-facing camera on the Honor 6 Plus, which is nothing too fancy, as we can find the same on the latest Ascent P7, G7 and Mate7.

The dual camera is the best thing about the Huawei Honor 6 Plus

On the back however, things are a little bit different. Similar to the HTC’s One M8’s Duo Camera system, the Honor 6 Plus takes advantage of two rear shooters, a system which has been dubbed “Symmetrical dual camera technology.”

The main shooter can snap 13MP shots, but it’s actually made up of two 8MP sensors with impressive 1.85 micron pixel size. There’s a dedicated ISP (Image Signal Processor) used for merging and interpolation.

One of the cameras has f/2.0 aperture and autofocus, while the other dons f/2.4 and a fixed focus setup. Huawei says the camera is capable of achieving 0.1s focusing time, which means we are dealing with one of the fastest smartphone cameras on the market.

The two sensors working in concert with two lens kits allow the camera system to take in more light when snapping a picture, especially in night time scenarios.

The dual-camera setup is framed with zinc alloy, which is in charge of keeping the sensors in parallel position and misalignment-free.

With the new camera, Huawei also promises quality noise reduction and low-light performance.

The company will open pre-orders for this exquisite handset starting today, while shipping out to customers starts next week. The device will go on sale first in China, in two versions – a dual SIM with 4G connectivity (for one SIM) variant and a dual SIM model where both slots support 4G LTE. The first version will sell for around $320 / €256, while the second goes live for $400 / €320.
