We reported back in January that Huawei planned to launch two new mid-range Android smartphones in India sometime in March, the Ascend G730 and Ascend Y600.

Unfortunately, neither has made it to India yet, but Huawei has just announced that the Ascend Y600 will soon be available for purchase via major retailers across the country.

Although there’s no word on price tag, judging by the phone’s specs sheet, Huawei Ascend Y600 should be among the most affordable Android smartphones launched by the Chinese company in India.

Fonearena reports that the Ascend Y600 will be available in both black and white color versions, but an official release date has yet to be confirmed by Huawei.

Unlike the Ascend G730, which is expected to boast a large 5.5-inch display, the recently made official Huawei Ascend Y600 has been confirmed to sport a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display. The bad news is that the smartphone only supports 854 x 480 pixels resolution.

Software-wise, the Ascend Y600 will ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system out of the box, which has become the standard platform for mid-range devices. Alongside Google’s mobile platform, the smartphone runs Huawei’s Emotion UI, which might or might not please Android fans.

When it comes to hardware, Huawei’s budget-friendly smartphone is far from being impressive. The device is equipped with a dual-core MediaTek MT6572 processor clocked at only 1.2GHz, which is complemented by a Mali 400 graphics processing unit.

It also packs 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory. However, the actual storage space available is much lower, so owners might want to add a microSD memory card, which could boost internal memory up to 32GB.

On the back, Huawei Ascend Y600 features a 5-megapixel photo snapper that features autofocus and video recording. Unfortunately, the smartphone does not come with LED flash, so low-light pictures are out of the question.

On a more positive note, the budget-friendly handset packs a secondary VGA camera on the front, which is perfect for video calls.

Speaking of which, Huawei Ascend Y600 offers both 3G HSPA+ and WiFi support connectivity. In addition, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS with A-GPS are included as well.

Last but not least, the Ascend Y600 is powered by a more than decent 2100 mAh battery, which has yet to be rated by the manufacturer.

Given the fact that the smartphone does not feature dual-SIM support, it will be interesting to see how well the Huawei Ascend Y600 will sell in India. Stay tuned for more updates on the phone’s price tag and availability.
