Rumors on the upcoming successor of the Huawei Ascend P7 that would feature a sapphire display popped up online earlier this month. However, there was no confirmation that the upgraded version of the smartphone could pack a sapphire display, just the probability that it could happen.

Today, Huawei’s Device Chairman Yu Chengdong posted a picture of the new Ascend P7 on its Weibo account, which suggests the smartphone will indeed pack a sapphire display.

This is also an indication that Huawei might unveil the Ascend P7 early next month at IFA 2014 when the Chinese company is expected to launch its Ascend Mate 7 phablet as well.

The sapphire display is a lot tougher than Corning Gorilla Glass (about four times harder) and it’s much more transparent. This is probably one of the reasons Apple will bring it into its next iPhone model.

Sadly, the sapphire displays cost 3 or 4 times more than Gorilla Glass does. On top of that, they are also much heavier than the latter.

Nevertheless, sapphire display is something that the handset maker will probably start to use in order to differentiate their products from others in the same segment of the market.

It will be interesting to see how many companies will start to adopt the new technology and whether or not display manufacturers will be able to meet the demand. What do you think about sapphire displays? Are they worth the investment or they’re just a gimmick meant to attract more customers?
